What size coat rack fits my wall?

Measure the clear run of wall you have. As a guide, many people choose a rack about 100mm shorter than that measurement — it is not a rule, but finishing flush against a door frame or a radiator can look like a mistake, and the gap is what makes it read as fitted rather than wedged in.

The twelve standard sizes below cover most hallways. Widths are the rack itself, not the packaging.

Every rack is 15cm (6") high and 8cm (3") deep, whatever the width.

How many hooks do I need?

A rough starting point is the number of people in the house, plus a hook or two spare. Coats often get doubled up on a hook in practice, and that extra capacity is what stops a rack looking permanently overloaded by November.

Two people in a flat often find a 450mm three-hook rack enough. A family of four might look at 900mm and six hooks. Seven and eight hook racks at 1200mm suit busy households, shared entrance halls and boot rooms where several coats, bags and leads all land at once — but it depends how you use the space.

Will it hold a wet winter coat?

Yes, and the limit is almost never the rack — it is what you fix it to. The galvanised boat cleats are screwed into solid redwood rather than clipped onto a thin backboard. I chose them for the coastal look as much as anything else.

The wall is the part worth thinking about. On brick or block, ordinary plugs and screws are fine. On a stud wall, fixing into the studs is ideal wherever the rack width allows it. Where you cannot reach a stud, use proprietary plasterboard fixings rated for the load.

The reason to spread them is that the board itself has a limit. One square metre of correctly installed single plasterboard supports around 15kg, double board around 25kg, and every stud effectively resets that allowance for the square metre on either side of it. A loaded coat rack in a family hallway gets closer to that number than people expect once four winter coats and a school bag are hanging on it.

How high should it go?

Fit it so the longest coat you own hangs clear of the floor, then add a little. Measure your longest coat from collar to hem, and set the hooks at that height plus roughly 150mm.

That usually lands somewhere near shoulder height for an adult, which is also where a rack looks right on the wall. Fitting lower is the more common mistake — it puts sleeves on the skirting board and makes the hallway feel narrower than it is.

What colour can I have?

The rack is finished in classic white with a painted central strip, and the strip is yours to choose. Any shade from the Farrow & Ball signature palette works, and there are 132 of them.

Pick the strip to answer something already in the room — a front door, a kitchen island, the skirting. It is a narrow band of colour, so it can be bolder than you would paint a whole wall and still sit quietly.

What is it actually made of?

Solid redwood, cut and assembled by hand, then painted and lightly sanded back so the finish looks lived in rather than showroom new. The hooks are galvanised boat cleats — part of the coastal look, and screwed into the timber.

Redwood is a softwood, and that is deliberate rather than a compromise. It takes paint far better than oak does, holds a screw well at this thickness, and keeps the rack light enough to fix to a stud wall without special measures.

How long does it take?
